Who am I?

Introduce yourself to the class however you'd like.

Here are some ideas:

* Talk about where you're from
* What does your name mean to you?
* Describe the books, movies, videogames, etc. that intrigue you.
* Talk about your hopes and dreams.
* Describe who you are as a reader, writer, and/or learner.

Write your piece as a poem, a letter, a tweet, a story, a list...however you'd like!

  1. Hello everyone! My name is Tyler Hinson and I am a junior and biology major. For those who don't know, I am a girl. I'm from Harrisburg, PA and I turn 21 on December 16th! I am African American, Native American (Iroquois and Cherokee tribes), and German. As I said previously, my name is Tyler and it is very special and unique to me. My mom simply said I looked like a "Tyler" when I was born. I used to get laughed at in elementary school because I had a "boy" name but I always loved my name. One thing that I always loved was animals. My major is biology with a concentration in animal behavior. I hope to go on to veterinary school and own my own animal shelter. Some other things I enjoy are food & cooking, cars & driving, and being outside & with friends. I also had the privilege in joining a prestigious and historically black organization, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. Some of my favorite movies are Batman the Trilogy, Scary Movie 3, Titanic, Eve's Bayou, and Forrest Gump. I like to read anything interesting but nothing scary. I am a hands on learner and I would say that I am pretty creative and I hope to display that in my writing in this class.

  2. Hello everyone. My name is Morgan McAdoo. I am currently a junior at Millersville University as well. I am majoring in early childhood education with the hopes of becoming a first grade teacher. I was born and raised in Lancaster County. I do not have any interesting stories behind my name, but my sister and I share the same middle name, Lee. I am apart of the Millersville University Dance Team which keeps me busy. In my free time I enjoy baking, reading, and being outside. I also enjoy reading from the authors Nicholas Sparks and John Green. Since I enjoy reading from the author Nicholas Sparks, I also enjoy watching romance movies, but I also enjoy movies that make me laugh. I am a very visual learner. By taking this course, I hope to become a more creative writer. I am anxious to see how my writing improves by the end of this course.

  3. Hi everyone. My name is Kayla Wolf and I am a junior at Millersville commuting from Red Lion, which is in York area. I am majoring in Psychology but have not made my mind up yet as to what I want to do with that. My name identifies me as being my own person especially since I have a twin sister. In that aspect it helps differentiate us but I also am used to be called Kelsey too. I think I as a person am also besides a student identified as someone who works a lot, one who enjoys sports, and with free time likes to go out with friends. My favorite types of movies are comedy and romance and as I like to read I don't get to much unless it is a textbook for class. I am hoping that this class will also help me to write creatively better and more naturally.

  5. Hello, my name is Katie Prichard. I am a sophomore Meteorology major going for my Masters in Emergency Management in the future at Millersville. I live in the country in Northeast Pennsylvania. The closest town to me has 500 people and the closest city is an hour and a half drive. Given that, I grew up with interests such as sports, fishing, and four wheeling. My family has lived in the area since they came over from Ireland, hence my Irish name. My last name Prichard is German. I love my name because it shows the blending of different ethnicities that make up my family. I love playing video games and reading Stephen King books. My favorite movies are Forrest Gump, Twister, and Lone Survivor. My dream is to some day either be a Meteorologist or work in the Emergency Management field and marry my high school sweetheart who is now in the military. I have always been a creative person and a decent writer so I'm excited to see what this class has to offer.

  6. Hey guys,
My name is Alexis Schmidt and I am a junior majoring in Secondary English Education with an option in ESL Studies. I am from a tiny town in South Jersey (The Pine Barrens) called Shamong. My town used to be an Indian reservation and therefore Shamong means ‘place of many deer.’ To me my name signifies my footprints on this earth. My friends call me Lex, while my family calls me Alexis or LexiLou (mom’s nickname). I enjoy reading young adult literature to familiarize myself with the types of books my students will be reading. Also, I find my guilty pleasure books to be mystery romance. I’m not much of a movie watcher, unless it was made from a book to a movie I have read. Hopes and dreams.. hmm. I plan on moving to South Carolina near my family after I graduate in Spring 2016. There, I will achieve my masters (I have no idea in what yet). Before settling into a job, I want to hike and camp around 200 miles of the Appalachian Trail in one trip. My father and I have traveled around 300 miles throughout several trips. As a reader, I have to visualize what is happening in the book. As a writer I find myself writing about things I have seen and experiences along hikes and trips. I love to read other peoples writing to experience a new insight.

  7. Hey everyone!
My name is Anna Raneiri and I am a junior but because I am a dual major in both early childhood and special education with a minor in athletic coaching, I am on that dreaded 5 year plan. I have quite the love for children and for sports. I grew up in a family of sports watchers and participators so it was only fitting for me to follow suit. I played soccer for the university freshman year but it ended up being too much. Having said that, I took it upon myself to create the women's club soccer team that we now have (as of this past fall semester)! I am a strong advocate for this so if you or anyone you know is interested in playing soccer feel free to contact me! As far as my home life, I am from Reading, PA and went to Exeter High School. The commute is around 45 minutes and at first this was a huge turn off for me when i was looking into schools. However, once I saw the campus I fell in love and the commute is perfect. I can go home and come back to school whenever I want. I have two nieces and a nephew ages 6, 2, and almost a year. They are my world and I would not be able to spend as much time with them as I do if the commute was not like it is. I work at Gold's Gym in Lancaster in the kids gym and I am a waitress at PJ Whelihans in Reading. I also have regular babysitting jobs. As you can tell I am very fond of children and that only confirms that I am in the correct field. I am looking forward to the challenge that this class brings and I hope that it can expand my creative and formal writing. I have grown a great deal this semester in acknowledging views other than my own and I hope that this class can further that insight and help me with my future career.

  8. Hi! My name's Kelsey Battista and I'm a junior with a dual major in Early Childhood and Special Education. When I graduate in spring of 2016, I hope to work in a second grade classroom. I'm from Havertown, which is in Delaware County outside of Philadelphia. At home, I work at Rita's Water Ice and cater. I love my name because my first name can be either a male or female name, and my last name represents my Italian heritage. In my free time, I love to be outside, read, listen to music, and bake. On campus I am a part of a national sorority, Alpha Xi Delta and I love every minute of it. Some of my favorite authors are J.K. Rowling, Jodi Picoult, and Gillian Flynn. I'm a very visual and hands-on learner and hope to become a more creative writer from this class.

  9. Hi everyone!

My name is Korynn Wagner and I am in the process of becoming a future elementary school teacher. I am currently a junior and am a dual major in early childhood and special education. I am from Mifflinburg which is a small, close-knit community in the central part of Pennsylvania. My faith and family mean the world to me. I have been blessed with wonderful parents who have always encouraged me, loved me, and supported me in all things. I give both God and my parents full credit for the person that I am today. I'm blessed beyond measure which is why I want to give back to children someday. My greatest hope in life is to bring light, love, and joy to children who have experienced darkness in their lives.

I love spending time with the people I love most, shopping, getting Starbucks, crocheting, exercising, the sky, taking naps, reading a good book, helping others, traveling, and best of all going on mission trips which has instilled the hope to change the lives of children in my heart. I've been to Honduras, Arizona, and just recently in March I went to the Dominican Republic. Each trip I was able to serve, but also be served by some of the most sweet, generous, and loving children I have ever met. My life was changed forever by the precious souls that have so little but give so much. If you ever have a chance to go on a mission trip or an opportunity to help those in need...do it! You will experience a beautiful part of life, and forever be changed for the better, I promise! :)

As a writer, I have never despised writing or loved writing. But as I've gotten older I have learned to appreciate writing and be thankful for the gift it brings. I love to read when I have time but I do not have any favorite authors. I am looking forward to becoming a better writer and learning more about all of you. I hope that in these four weeks I will not only improve my writing skills, but learn more about the world around me!

  10. If you put a jelly bean inside a potato, does it become a jelly potato bean?

    Salutations classmates!

My name is Emily. You can call me Em, Emily- heck you can even call me Asian as long as it's endearing! I am currently a senior with a major in Graphics and Design and with an English minor. My name was given to me by my parents that related to my actual birth name, Li Huan. I am adopted from Changsha, China. In truth my Chinese name means a bit more to me than my actual name, but that's mostly because of my origin and how I have grown up. For me it means both its literal translation "happy," as well as a chance at a life I never would have gotten if it weren't for being adopted.

I'm a little old school in terms of books that I have enjoyed in the past, like J.K Rowling and J.R.R. Tolkien. I also have enjoyed several books by Gregory Maguire along with Brian Jacques Redwall series. And while it isn't a large novel, a book that's message has stayed with me for a good while is 'The Alchemist' by Paulo Coehlo. Other than my past readings, I really love to draw and truthfully am a game-o-holic. I love any kind really, though I'm very into Indie games such as Journey, Flower, Monument, and several others. I have a love for 8-bit and 16-bit games as well.

A part of me dreams to someday work for an animation team, while another part of me just wishes to find something in my current field. I currently work full time at Panera Bread located on Fruitville Pike, so if you ever see me there you can be sure I can try to snag you something good!

All jokes aside, my other hobbies include both working out and kickboxing. Hope to meet most if not all of you come tomorrow!

  13. Hello! My name is Bridget Hufnagel. I just transferred here last semester from Temple University. I am a junior here at Millersville University. I am on the women’s lacrosse team here. Our season is in the spring, and I am very excited for it to begin! The first game is a home game on March 4th against Holy Family if anyone is interested in coming out and supporting! I live with my mother and father and my sister lives in Virginia because she attends school at James Madison University. I was born and raised here in Lancaster County. I went off to college at Temple University because I received a lacrosse scholarship. Unfortunately my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, and I felt that I needed to come home and help her through this journey. I am proud to announce that she is doing very well and will be done receiving treatments this Tuesday Dec. 16th and she gets to ring the bell because her cancer is in remission! I am majoring in Social Work here at Millersville, and I hope someday to be able to bring as many people social justice as I possibly can. I love getting to know people and helping them in any way that I possibly can, which is why I chose social work as my future profession. I delight in learning about people on a deeper level. I feel that a lot of people enjoy being listened to, and it helps in times of trouble as well as in times of joy. I love romance novels. My favorite kinds of movies are romantic comedies such as: The Back Up Plan, The Proposal, and Bridesmaids. I am a visual learner. I am not very good at math, I am more interested in social sciences. I enjoy music, always. My favorite genre of music is country. One of my favorite things to do in my free time is to write letters to my friends and/or my family.
I love deep conversation, a strong cup of coffee, good company and positive people. I believe in God, and my faith is a huge part of who I am today. I love life, and try to live it to the fullest every day.

  14. Hello my name is Kasey Patterson. I am a senior here at Millersville University. I am very excited to be graduating this spring. I am from Lancaster, homegrown and raised. I went to school at Penn Manor, which is in the backyard of Millersville.

My name means "brave and courageous". I thought this was funny because I was the shyest kid you would ever meet. As I grow older I am coming to a better understanding to the significance of the meaning of my name.

My all time favorite book is "Pride and Prejudice". Although I have never read the unabridged cover to cover, I have read or watched everything else Austen. In general I like various genres. Some of my favorite authors or series is Nicholas Sparks and Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum number books. Mrs. Evanovich will literally have you laughing out loud. As TV goes, I have two favorite shows at the moment, they are The Big Bang Theory (again comedy), and One Upon a Time. In my opinion, the writers of Once Upon a Time are geniuses. I believe they are the same writers fro LOST. They have a way of always leaving you wanting more and creating a deeply intricate woven story line that makes you pay attention to every detail or moment. My interests in movies basically aligns to my taste in cinematic art (movies). I like my comedies because I like to laugh, but I like other genres of science fiction, action, drama, etc. Some of the movies that i have enjoyed over the past couple of years are: Star Trek: Into Darkness, Gone Girl, and Just Go With It. As you can see, mainly my reading is for entertainment, but some reading consist of professional development. As an Early Education Major, I like to read about things they could make me a better teacher or explains how people, children or cultures learn.

My hope and dream is to find a career in my field of study. It is something that I am very passionate about and have always wanted to do since they age of 9.

  15. Hi Everyone!

My name is Megan Beirne. I am a junior and studying Middle Level Education and Social Studies. I stay busy at Millersville juggling three jobs and two clubs. I am an RA in Gaige Hall, a Tour Guide for admissions, and a hostess at JB Dawson’s. I am involved with the Millersville girls’ soccer club and I am the President of the education organization Student Pennsylvania Education Association, SPSEA. I am from Delaware County and I went to Garnet Valley high school. As much as I love where I am from, I love Lancaster County. I think it is a very eclectic area. There are Amish, there are new condominiums, and there is a very modern city with tons of music and art. I’ve enjoyed exploring Lancaster during my two and a half years here at Millersville. When I graduate my dream would be participating in Teach for America. This winter, to try to accomplish that dream, I will be applying for internships that Teach for America Recognize, and I will even be completing my first early application for the program. I am excited that I am getting closer and closer to graduation. I like college, but I am ready to start the next chapter in my life. I am hoping this class will make me more confident as a professional writer. I need to improve my writing skills since I am so close to being out in the real world.

  17. Hello Everyone,
My name is Ryan Shirk and I am a senior here at Millersville, studying Government and Political Affairs. I am a local guy, I went to Hempfield High School, but now am living in here in town. My name to me is pretty generic, but it is kind of a compromise between my parents. My dad wanted Rory and my mother wanted Cory, how they got Ryan I will never understand. Admittedly, I dont read many books, the last one I read was "Killing Lincoln", I am a nerd for historical things like that. Some movies that really interest me are anything gangster, like Goodfellas or the Godfather. I am also into war movies, We Were Soldiers being my favorite. Also, I just recently saw Guardians of the Galaxy and that was fantastic, loved the soundtrack. As far as my hopes and dreams I am really focused on the near future. I hope to graduate next December and possibly find an internship for this summer, with hopes for one in Harrisburg at the state government level. As a reader, I love to get other people's perspectives on subjects.I really pride myself on my writing, especially for school, but I really hope to improve with this class. I am looking forward to working with all of you and hope everyone has success this semester.

  18. Hello my name is Rachel Smith. I am a junior and a philosophy major and I commute. I am live in Delta, PA and went to Red Lion High school. I went to IUP for a few weeks but then came home and went to Harford Community College in Maryland. I played one season of lacrosse there and transferred to MU last semester. I live at home with my parents and sisters and our zoo...2 dogs, 2 horses, 1 snake, and 6 cats. In my free time, I enjoy gardening and adventuring in my backyard. I also like to play lacrosse, volleyball, tennis, and racquetball. In the summer time, I go tubing, backpacking, and boating on the Susquehanna. I work at Cherry Hill Orchard near Millersville. I also love to eat, especially crabs, sushi, and thanksgiving food.
As a reader, I love nonfiction. I like true adventure/survival stories and philosophical works. Right now I'm reading The Grand Design by Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow. As a writer, I've been told my writing is enjoyable to read. I like to be precise and to the point. I find conclusions especially difficult and quite useless. As a learner, I value learning for learning's sake. A college education and a degree are not necessary for me to achieve my goals... Ugh goals... I don't like goals either. I just want to be a farmer... I know people who are college graduates and still don't know the difference between "their, there, and they're." So I just think that college degrees are overrated and ridiculously expensive. If my parents and grandparents weren't paying for my school, I wouldn't be here. I appreciate this opportunity though and therefore, I'm taking advantage of it. I look forward to working with you all this month.

  19. What is culture? I was taught that culture is anything you do EXCEPT for sleeping, breathing, and shitting. Those are the things that you can't help but do. Culture is socially constructed. No one teaches you how to sleep. You just do it. Music, food, how you should affection, how you dress. These things all vary from culture to culture. In some cultures, it is disrespectful to look someone in the eye while in others it is rude not to maintain eye contact. Cultural influences are passed down from generation to generation until it is something etched in stone and it would be abnormal to do something different. Culture is what makes this world much more interesting. Who would we learn from if everyone was the same? Who would be viewed as creative if no one was doing anything different. Learning from different cultures is what has brought us this far. We all can learn from each other.

  20. Hello everyone!
My name is Mark Fiorentino and I am currently a junior here at Millersville. I am a communications major with a focus in broadcasting. I am from Bangor, PA which is about 2 and a half hours north of here. It close to Easton and Bethlehem, PA. My name is unique to me because my last name isn't as common. I am not a big book person. I have read a good amount of books but that was when I was younger. I am really into movies now especially from the last class I just had, Intro to Film. I love a wide variety of movies and wish I could watch more. Video games also are amazing because is it like a playable book or movie. You are allowed to create your own story within the story itself, while the art in the game is incredible itself. It is crazy how much goes into those games.
There is only one thing I would really want to do in my life and that is being in a band and playing the drums. I know this sounds something like impossible but I can't see myself do anything else. It is my life. I want to be in a band to inspire, entertain, make people dance and forget about their lives. Something that they can be free with and be happy. Something that makes them feel good. If that doesn't work out, I would love to go into the film making scene.

  21. Hey guys, I'm Pat Sands. I am Irish-Dutch (Holland Dutch not Pa Dutch) My Dad's side is from Ireland, Bray and later Dublin to be exact. My grandfather moved here for work when he was 40. My Mom's side has lived in Pa a lot longer but they are originally from Holland. I take great pride in my Irish heritage and try to keep it alive however I can because it is slowly fading from my family. My dutch side however is raging like a fire. Mostly because I am much closer with my Mom's side than my Dad's side. I'm a junior here at Millersville majoring in Print Journalism. I am actually from Lancaster, Pa, about 10 minuets away from Millersville so I haven't gone that far yet. But I plan on getting away from Pa after I graduate. I, myself, am not huge on books except when it comes to comic books. I am a huge comic book geek. I love everything about them including the movies (Guardians of the Galaxy, the Avengers, and the Amazing Spiderman being my favorites) I also love Video Games as you could imagine. Comics and Video Games usually go hand in hand. My favorite series is Assassin's Creed because I love the message it gives. Nothing is true, Everything is permitted. The game is all about freedom and the eternal struggle for just that. I think the reason I love video games so much is because I love a really good story. RPGs are my favorite because they allow me to pretty much make my own story within the game. Skyrim is one of these games that I had a blast with and was able to create any character I wanted. Even though the game had a predestined place for him, I was able to play how I wanted to and with my explosive creative mind, I found much fun in that.
My hope for my future is to become a well known writer for IGN Entertainment who is an online company which supplies reviews, updates, news stories about Movies, tv, video games mostly gearing toward the geeks of the world. I plan on applying for a job as a feature writer as soon as I graduate. Though I will probably need experience first and if that is so I will freelance for as long as it takes until I am employed by IGN.
Me as a reader am not so strong. It takes be a while to read a book. As for other things like magazines or blogs, I enjoy reading. Unless a book is about something that I am very much interested in, I will probably have a hard time reading it.
As a writer, I am very good. I don't mean to brag but I love to write and I am very good at it. Hence why I plan to make a career out of it.
And for learning, I enjoy learning and look forward to learning something new each day.

I’m originally from a small town in Maryland, and I actually came to MU for Meteorology… That clearly didn’t end well for me. But I love teaching and high school is definitely where I want to be. I am a member of Alpha Sigma Tau sorority and am active Secretary in the All Greek Council here at Millersville. I absolutely love giving back to the community. In my spare time I enjoy hanging out with my roommates or friends, watching anything on Netflix, crafting, and going to the gym. When I was younger I used to keep diaries and journals, but I have lost touch with that. Hopefully with this class it will motivate me to continue to express myself through writing!

  25. Hello my name is Joseph. I am a junior, my major is Elementary Education. I am from Philadelphia, Pa. I am a big sports, and I root for all the home teams. I enjoy collecting a variety of sports memorabilia. I am named after my grandfather. His name was Giuseppe but in America it is Joseph. When I was younger my family and I drove from Philadelphia to the Grand Canyon and back, with many stops along the way (the trip took 28 days total). Although it was a lot of time sitting in the car, especially at the age, it gave me the desire to explore this country and the world.

  26. While I thought 2014 was a pretty good year, I am hoping for even better things for 2015. I really enjoy the work I do, my growing family, and my solid group of friends. I enjoy traveling to new places each year and expanding my research opportunities, too. I actually enjoy growing old and being more at peace with who I am than I was in my 20s. I care far less about what people think of me than ever before. I guess, it's because I have all that I want at the moment. I really do.
That being said, I would really like to lose about 15 pounds, would like to visit Africa for the first time, and would like to get more involved in my community. As a dad, I want to take the time to have good conversations with my kids about life and to experience the world with them. My reading goal is to read 100 books this year - from nonfiction to children's books, graphic novels to professional books. I know how my reading awakens a deeper understanding and appreciation of the world. I also hope to grow in my faith in deeper ways too. This means more time to meditate and to read the Word as well as meeting with friends who will challenge me in the ways I think and believe. I want to continue to grow and to appreciate the world around me. Ambitious? Probably. But I think I am up to it...
